Success Story: Natasha Runyan

Tell us about you and your experience finding work on HireMyMom.

I first started with HireMyMom back in June 2020 and I immediately started applying for jobs that I either knew I could do, or hoped would at least give me a chance. Most of the jobs I was not qualified for, however, I knew that I just needed to get an interview. A few weeks later I received two “first round” interviews, but neither were successful. In Feb 2020, I received an email from a job I applied for and completely forgot about. They wanted to interview me and I ended up landing the job! This was finally my moment to bring in more income for my family. But then, a month later COVID-19 hit and my job, located in Brooklyn, NY, took a hit. There was immediately no work for me to plan (I was a personal assistant) and my boss was looking to find me work. I knew I would need to find a new job immediately. I went back to HireMyMom in Sept 2020 and a couple weeks later, had another job lined up part time. However, my husband’s job took a hit as well so I knew I needed to do what I needed to get to being full-time. Luckily, my job listened and in October, I was promoted to full time with a pay raise. To apply for jobs online, you have to make sure those companies “hear” you. More and more people are looking for work online, or a side job to bring in extra income. Apply for the job and follow up a week later if you haven’t heard from them! Don’t lose motivation if there are no postings within your experience, or if you don’t hear back from anyone at first. Apply for jobs that you believe you could do, despite what your resume says. Always keep your options open and don’t put yourself into a bubble of what you have experience in. It’s about what CAN you do.

What are your top tips for landing a job or jobs on HireMyMom.com?

Apply for everything. FOLLOW UP to the email listed directly. Let them know that you’re very interested and would love an interview.

What piece of advice do you wish someone had given you at the start of your work from home journey?

It won’t be overnight. Sometimes there just aren’t jobs that you’re interested in, or what you believe you can do, and that’s okay!

What do you see as your greatest success in life?

Having an extremely strong work ethic. I do not give up, ever.

What is something about you that many people don’t know?

As outgoing as I am, I am very sensitive.

Success Story: Marianna Maguire

Tell us about you and your experience finding work on HireMyMom.

Most job boards are usually overwhelmed with both candidates and jobs, making it difficult to really stand out. HireMyMom allows both job seekers and employers to interact much more closely through a smaller job forum with real needs on both sides, and you don’t get lost in the crowd.

As a mom, it’s important for me to balance the needs of my family – which these days are ever-changing due to the pandemic – and the personal desire to work in a professionally-fulfilling role.

This is the first time I’ve successfully found flexible, work from home engagements that utilize my skillset as well and I’m so thankful to have come across HireMyMom!

What are your top tips for landing a job or jobs on HireMyMom.com?

I would encourage job seekers to be patient, wait for the right opportunity that is a good fit for them, and apply with confidence!

Even if a job posting seeks a specific skillset, employers appreciate a candidate who can also add value to their organization in other areas. Enjoy getting to know the employer and let yourself shine!

What piece of advice do you wish someone had given you at the start of your work from home journey?

When the right job comes your way and you’re invited to interview, don’t be nervous, be yourself and you’ll do great!

What do you see as your greatest success in life?

The drive to never stop learning or improving yourself!

What is something about you that many people don’t know?

I’m private about my generosity but I’m very proud of it.

Success Story: Nicole Blackwood

Tell us about you and your experience finding work on HireMyMom.

I had been looking for a job since June with no luck, I stumbled upon HireMyMom on Facebook, joined the FB page and after seeing some of the success stories decided to give the website a try. After a week and a half, and applying for 8 jobs on the site, I was contacted for an interview and was hired the next day!

What are your top tips for landing a job or jobs on HireMyMom.com?

Don’t get discouraged, apply to anything you know you have at least a few of the skills for, one person will never have every skill an employer is looking for. And look outside your comfort zone. I have never worked as a copywriter before, turns out I’m pretty good at it.

What piece of advice do you wish someone had given you at the start of your work from home journey?

“If it was meant for everyone, then everyone would do it”. I wasn’t sure how I would take working from home, I enjoy being out and around people, turns out working from home is a pretty good fit for me.

What do you see as your greatest success in life?

Being able to stay home with my kids when they were young. You will never get that time back, and I am so eternally grateful I had the precious time with them.

What is something about you that many people don’t know?

I love to binge watch cooking competitions and HGTV.

Success Story: Lisa Trinidad

Tell us about you and your experience finding work on HireMyMom.

I heard about Hire My Mom through a FB group. I started working as a Virtual Assistant and was having a difficult time finding clients. I went ahead and signed up for HMM and I would review their postings every day. I was so surprised with the amount of legitimate postings on their site each day.  Within a month of actively searching, I was hired for two amazing companies. I made sure to apply for jobs, that I felt like our values aligned; I wanted to make sure I could be with them long term. I was very strategic on which places to apply. If I weren’t, I’m pretty sure I’d land a job even sooner.

I love HMM because, the entrepreneurs and candidates looking to hire, understand that we are Moms, so they are really flexible. They also value us, because we are just as hardworking.

What are your top tips for landing a job or jobs on HireMyMom.com?

My tips for landing a job(s) at HMM is to put a task on your google calendar for a certain time in the day and use that time to search and apply for jobs.

Make sure you have your a cover letter and resume ready to go.

Make sure you read the job description carefully as it gives clues about the type of company you will be working for and how you see yourself fit in doing that work.

Make sure you also use the message box to add a little flair to who you are and why you’d love to work with this business.

If you sent an email to apply, please follow up within 3 – 5 days.

Keep checking week after week, because there are so many jobs posted daily, and I’m sure you will find the perfect fit in due time. If you make it your task to log in everyday for a month, I’m sure you will find a good fit. Don’t give up!

What piece of advice do you wish someone had given you at the start of your work from home journey?

I wish, someone would’ve told me about HireMyMom sooner!

What do you see as your greatest success in life?

My greatest success in life, is being a Mom. Also being able to have it all, flexibility, time to raise my girls and be able to provide for my family. Not giving up in this journey to live the life I always wanted.

What is something about you that many people don’t know?

Many people don’t know that I used to work for Telemundo/NBC! I also had a career of over ten years working in Higher Education, before I left to become a freelancer.

Success Story : Erica Gilbert

Tell us about you and your experience finding work on HireMyMom.

I knew after my daughter was born I did not want to return to my job and have to put her in daycare. Luckily, I came across Hire My Mom and landed my dream job in about two months. I had several interviews before I ended up with the VA position I have now and  it could not be a more perfect fit.

What are your top tips for landing a job or jobs on HireMyMom.com?

Always be true to yourself and don’t apply to jobs that you know you don’t have the skill set for unless they say they are willing to train you. It’s also important to not be discouraged while searching for a job because it takes time to find the right fit. Have patience and pray for the right job to come your way.

What piece of advice do you wish someone had given you at the start of your work from home journey?

It’s very important to make sure your resume is all that it can be. I highly recommend using Canva to truly customize your resume and making it stand out from all the rest. Also be sure to customize every cover letter that you send.

What do you see as your greatest success in life?

My greatest success in life will always be my daughter. She is such a light and a true joy to be around. I am beyond blessed to be her Mommy.

What is something about you that many people don’t know?

I actually graduated nursing school, accepted my first nursing position, and soon after I found out I was expecting. After my daughter was born I ended up doing a complete career change in order to be able to stay home with her and it was the best decision I’ve ever made.

HireMyMom Success Story: Abbey Metz

Tell us about you and your experience finding work on HireMyMom.

I was skeptical to sign up for HireMyMom as I’ve always used free Job boards like Indeed but I decided to give it a try. After I revised my resume, I started to apply to a few jobs that I knew I would be good at, some I had tons of experience in the related field and others I didn’t have any professional experience in. I made sure to write a cover letter for each job explaining why I would be a good fit. After a week, I had two rejections, so I was a bit discouraged and left it at that, but within the next week two more companies reached out for interviews! I landed a job as a social media manager with no experience doing this, and another job as an appointment setter!

What did you do previously?

I currently am an administrative assistant at a large commercial HVAC company. I did have experience doing this type of work remotely as well. I have a sales background and have always done various virtual assistant tasks for bloggers over the years.

What are your top tips for landing a job or jobs on HireMyMom.com?

Write a cover letter for each application explaining why you would be a good fit but be honest about your skills. Although I didn’t have experience in the fields I was hired for, I had many skills needed to complete the tasks and am a fast learner. But, I was still very honest about what I knew and what I didn’t!

What’s your favorite thing about HireMyMom.com?

My favorite thing about HireMyMom is the quality of job postings. You know there won’t be a bunch of scams to sift through and there are new postings very regularly. They also know you are a mom and need flexibility.

What’s one fun or interesting fact about you?

I love to paddle board at Lake Erie!.

HireMyMom Employer Success Story: Ken Mahar

Tell us a little about your business.

Email Broadcast is a full-service email marketing agency that handles our clients’ entire email marketing campaigns—strategy, design, copywriting, automation, technology, and analysis. Very few businesses have the experience, skills, and people to run a successful email campaign. Sadly, what should be a major revenue source actually ends up costing them money on lost opportunities. Hiring our team of experts will help them win more business—which is why we take hiring the right people so seriously. We’ve been doing this since the year 2000 and we’re very good at it. We work with less than 25 clients at a time so we can focus on their success.

What is your top advice for small business owners looking to hire remote talent?

Read “Who: The A Method for Hiring” by Geoff Smart and Randy Street. It’s a game-changer when trying to find your needle in the haystack.

I was once told that a small business relies on the strength of its people, a medium business on the strength of its processes, and a large business on the strength of its values. That transition from people to processes can be one of the hardest jumps for a business to make, but it doesn’t happen at all if you don’t first begin with a strong team—or as we call them, “A” Players. If you have a current staffing problem or you’re just in the mood for a great business book, we highly recommend it.

What is your top tip for working with a virtual team?

Two things keep our team strong, the Japanese philosophy of Kaizen being one of them. We are obsessed with continual improvement—in ourselves and with our clients’ businesses. Each year we set goals for ourselves to master something new that benefits the team, company, ourselves, and clients. Complacency is the enemy. On the other hand, we have FUN. We know how to kick the dust up in all kinds of settings, all virtual, of course. And we love burritos… it’s our thing.

Why did you decide to use HireMyMom.com for your hiring needs?

We hire long-term part-time contractors with the right experience. Many moms don’t need or want to return to a 40-50 hour week grind and the massive sacrifices that entails. When they see our ad about working from home with zero commute, utilizing their skills, being part of a championship team, and an opportunity to contribute financially to their household – they are very interested. In short, it’s the perfect target audience for us.

We’ve been using HireMyMom for years and have found some great candidates that fit our team culture. Our job postings pretty much say it like it is on what we’re looking for… and what we’re not looking for. We hired one of our recent team members a couple of months ago through HireMyMom—a stellar addition to our burrito-loving gang of A-player marketing experts. She soared through her training and hit the ground running, already proving she’s ready for a promotion. She’s not only handling her own clients but is now managing the onboarding of new clients—and that’s a serious (and sometimes daunting) load of work. HireMyMom has helped us find our best team and we’ll continue using it as we expand.

We moved from South Florida to North Carolina almost two years ago and absolutely love it. We moved with the intent of a lifestyle change and that I could be a stay at home mom. I am SO glad I gave HireMyMom a chance!  After just one week, I found multiple jobs that interested me. I’m thrilled to have received two offers and have accepted a position!  Very excited about the work I’ll be doing and best of all I won’t have to sacrifice time with my kids. The fact that I get to work from home while still being present for my kids is a huge plus. I will definitely be using your services again in the future! Worth every penny!

HireMyMom Success Story: Sara Lingenfelter

What’s your success story with HireMyMom.com?

I had only been a member of HireMyMom for 2 months when I landed my first 2 clients! I was only trying to get 1 client, but both wanted to interview me and I thought why not? Besides, I didn’t think they would both offer me the position. But they did, and since neither was a high amount of hours I said yes to both. I learned so fast my responsibilities with my first client grew. We worked together for about 3 years total! I also ended up doing some work for his wife too. It got to the point, I wanted to do business management and he didn’t need that. To this day we are still friends. We even got to meet once at a conference we both happened to attend.
With the second client, after our phone interview, she offered me the job on the spot. She said she didn’t usually do that but after our conversation, she felt I was the right person. She and I worked together about 2 years. Again it was when I was moving onto higher level work and so we parted on a good note. And she and I still talk as well. While working for her, she flew me to an event in Vegas and it was really cool getting to meet her work her event.
After those two, I landed numerous other clients through HireMyMom. Some were just project-based, and during this time I was still working my bookkeeping job from home.  As my network grew, and I submitted really great proposals I was fortunately working a lot. About a year after doing VA work, I realized I could make more money doing that and that it could be a real business. In January of 2013, I decided to quit my job and do VA work full-time. Things had gotten to a point where if I wanted to do more, grow my skills, invest in building a business, I needed to quit my job to focus on this business that I “accidentally” started and just two years prior didn’t even know existed. I know many moms question if they can really make it as a VA. I’m very transparent when asked questions about how I got started, what I learned, and how much money I made. My first 11 months as a full-time VA, I billed out $47,000 which was $10,000 more than my salary as a bookkeeper.
I credit HireMyMom to giving me my start. Signing up was the BEST choice I made when trying to get started. Since starting I have worked with 75+ clients, I’ve really lost track of the exact number. I did eventually take a course to get certified in Online Business Management. The awesome thing about becoming a VA is there are so many possibilities. I ultimately did this work for my son, so he could stay home with me. HireMyMom is connecting clients and VA’s in a way that truly impacts families in an amazing way!

What’s your educational and experiential background?

My parents never went to college, and they always talked about how they regretted it. So I went to college at night after graduating high school. I had to work full-time to put myself through school, so that’s the reason I went at night plus the tuition was cheaper for night classes. I went to Drury University and got a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and Psychology. Then I always had office jobs from the age of 18 to 31. But my plan was to become a Probation and Parole office for the State of Missouri. To be clear, I had NO business background, no entrepreneurial experience, and no training when I started working as a VA.

What is your top tip (or tips) for landing a gig on HireMyMom.com?

I could give many, but I have this top tip and it’s what worked for me! It is, to be honest about your experience. Many clients are looking for certain skills. But when I first started, I didn’t have any experience with the online world. I had just dabbled in Google doc. I didn’t know any software programs. These potentials clients I was sending proposals to wanted people with certain skills that are common for someone that had been working as a VA for a while.
Here’s what I did and you can do too. I had gotten a job as a bookkeeper (prior to working online) but when I went to the job interview I thought I was interviewing to be a secretary. At the interview, I find out the owners of the business changed their mind. A friend referred me to them and told them I was smart. I had experience with money, payroll, and unions but that was it. And it just so happened they needed to replace their bookkeeper more than they did their receptionist. Long story short, they offered me the job. What does this have to do with being a VA? Well in a few months and with a bit of training, I was doing all aspects of bookkeeping for this HVAC company that did average sales of $3.5 million a year. In my proposals to potential clients I explained, that even though I didn’t have experience with the programs they list, I know that if given the chance I was 100% confident I could learn that program or programs. And I gave them the short explanation of how I went from never doing bookkeeping to being able to fully perform all job functions needed and had that job for 10 years. I did payroll, used account/inventory software, created financials and much more.
What does this mean for you? Give an example of a time you learned something and performed it very well! If they understand you can learn, potential clients are often very willing to give you a chance, especially if they feel you are organized, pay attention to details and communicate well. You can’t always teach someone those soft skills but you can teach them a software program or give them a chance to learn it.

What’s your favorite thing about HireMyMom.com?

My top favorite thing is that potential clients realize most of the VA’s applying are moms. I’ve heard negative talk in the past about a mom working from home also having her kids home with her. By having this site, most potential clients understand you have kids and it gets you over that hurdle that can be an issue with some. It makes the process easier and I love that.

What’s one fun fact about you?

I went skydiving when I was 21 but yet I am scared of rides at theme parks. I’ve never been on a roller coaster or any other ride like that, I play it safe, too scared! LOL I have no idea the logic.
