Tell us a little about you and your experience finding work on HireMyMom.

After a hard season of life, I decided to try and find a job where I can bring in some extra money while still being home with my son and not have to pay the insanely high costs of childcare. I saw an ad for HireMyMom, and I felt drawn to the site. Within my first day using the site I had two interviews scheduled and my first day as a VA is tomorrow!

 

What did you do previously?

Patient Advocacy. I have no previous experience as a Virtual Assistant. I have worked remotely on occasion at other jobs I’ve held, but nothing long term. I truly believe customizing my cover letters to mention how my past experience related specifically to each job I applied for helped me. I applied and also reached out via email to the contact listed on the job posting. The first job I reached out to this way is now my current employer! I fully believe that a customized email or cover letter and providing some information about yourself and your goals was the game changer for me!!

 

What is your top tip for landing a gig on HireMyMom.com?

Personalize your cover letter and always follow up. I think it’s so important because so many websites don’t provide that email contact information, and I believe if you have it, it’s worth reaching out to them to show you’re not only interested but that you’re willing to take charge and take a risk!! It can be scary to reach out to someone you don’t know, but it can come with big rewards as well!

 

What’s your favorite thing about HireMyMom.com?

That the employers are looking for help from women who are looking to better themselves and their families and understand the balancing act we take on as working mothers, especially those of us working from home.

 

What’s one fun or interesting fact about you?

I’m studying to become a certified aromatherapist.

I started as a Virtual Assistant two years ago. I was a teacher for six years and the opportunity for entrepreneurship presented itself, and I took it and ran with it. Remember that you can do hard things!                 

What is your top tip for working with a virtual team?

Be very clear about expectations and have your systems set up and communicate those through Standard Operating Procedures with your team. Your team can’t read your mind.

After I had my first child in 2016, my husband and I agreed that I could stay home at least for the first year. During that time, I completed a Talent Development Certification, while balancing the challenges of being a new mom.

I often studied for the exam during my daughter’s naptime.  In January 2018, I started my own training and consulting business and was hired for several contract jobs through HireMyMom.  It was a great way to generate income and build my confidence as a new entrepreneur.  As of April 2019, my business has grown to the point where I needed to hire my first part-time Virtual Assistant. I found great Virtual Assistants to help me in my business through HireMymom.

What did you do previously?

I was a corporate bank trainer for many years.  Then I worked as a training manager before I was promoted to a bank Director – all before I became a wife and a mom.

What is your top tip for landing a gig on HireMyMom.com?

I recommend applicants have a resume that is tailored for each job before applying. You only have a few seconds to capture the employer’s attention and market your skills. It is very important to personalize your cover letter because it is your first impression and your opportunity to explain why you’re the best person for the job. Also, I also recommend having samples of your work that you can submit as needed.

What’s your favorite thing about HireMyMom.com?

Since at one time I was a job seeker and now I’m an employer, my favorite thing about Hiremymom is they always have legit opportunities.  I have never experienced any scams.  As a job seeker, I always experienced quality gigs.  Now, as a business owner looking to hire, I have found several great candidates that are qualified and passionate about what they do.

What’s a fun or interesting fact about you?

I am a certified DISC Behavioral Styles Practitioner, which is a globally recognized behavior/personality assessment, similar to Myers Briggs but easier to use and implement.  DISC helps you to understand yourself, why other people do the things they do and how to communicate effectively with different types of people.  I help my clients use the benefits of DISC in their personal and professional life.

What’s your success story with HireMyMom.com?

I was rejected for the first job that I applied for on Hire My Mom. That, ultimately, ended up being the beginning of my success story.  When I was rejected, I was crushed, but I emailed the employer thanking them for their time and asked that she keep me in mind for future projects. To my surprise, she did reach back out to me when her selected applicant went on vacation. After working with me for two weeks, she decided that she wanted to keep me on. That was almost five years ago and not only do I still work with/for her — we have grown to become good friends.

Tell us a little about your business and how you got started.

I’m a creative and have in some way always offered my design services to others for more than 20 years. Because of Hire My Mom, however, and the job I secured through your group almost five years ago, I had a steady stream of income that allowed me to pour that money back into growing my business as a web designer/developer. My business is now an LLC, has a strong client base, and has grown enough in the last year that I am back on Hire My Mom. I was referred to HireMyMom.com from a church friend. At the time I was unable to work due to lack of childcare. I joined in January of that year and was employed by the end of February. Again the following year after a move, I joined HireMyMom.com again. For the past 1 1/2 years have worked for an amazing company owned by another amazing mom. I cannot stop shouting HireMyMom.com from the rooftops! I’ve enjoyed introducing it to so many moms out there looking for exactly what I found through hiremymom…my DREAM JOB. It’s hard for people to believe there’s a site out there focused on helping moms. When in fact,  the companies who advertise jobs here have a strong understanding of what career moms like myself are looking for. I wanted to find inner peace and perfect work/life balance that allows me to put my family first and not lose sight of my career goals.

I joined the website and actually got two awesome jobs in the span of 6 months!

  • Take the time to learn what they are looking for and promote yourself in a unique way that will make you memorable over hundreds if not thousands of other applicants:
  • Tell a short, yet intriguing story about yourself.
  • Find a way to relate reading and/or education that you’ve completed in a way that will make you shine in that position.
  • Bottom line, in your cover letter, don’t repeat your resume. Find a new and interesting way to tell your prospective employer about yourself.
  • Take care in every. single. application you submit. Don’t phone this in. If you expect to land an amazing job – you have to put amazing effort towards achieving it.
  • Don’t copy/paste for multiple positions. Research each company and reflect on that in your application.

Tell us a little about your business and how you got started.

I teach digital productivity to business owners. I got started by fixing my own productivity issues. That lead me to working with small business owners who had the similar struggles with focus and organization.

What advice do you have for entrepreneurs and home business owners?

Carve out time every week to think, plan, organize and review your work. Put it on your calendar. Taking 1 to 2 hours a week to do this may seem like a waste of time, but the:
  • planning- will save you from going down unproductive rabbit holes and get you off the hamster wheel of reacting to one emergency after the next
  • organizing – will allow you to work faster during the week and prevent redoing work you’ve already done
  • reviewing- will give you the opportunity to see what type of work that gave you the best results with the least effort. This information will give you a better idea of the types of projects and clients to engage with. It will also let you know what work should be automated or delegated (to a productive mom of course ;-).

When should one consider outsourcing or hiring additional help?

As soon as possible. The more time you can spend working in your zone of genius, the more value you will produce and the better you will feel. The only way to spend time doing the things you are great at is to have people help you with the areas outside of your sweet spot.

What is your top tip for hiring great talent?

Be annoyingly specific about how you want people to reach out to you about the position. If they can’t follow specific written instructions when applying, that’s not likely to change after hiring.

Hire My Mom has been a wonderful tool for me to find clients over the years.  I have been an active member off and for more than 6 years.  Every client I have found on this site has been wonderful to work with and flexible with my schedule. Whenever my business is in a lull, HireMyMom is the first place I go to find new clients.

What’s your educational and experiential background?

I have a degree in communications.  I have been a business owner since 2004.  I have owned a mortgage company, a video rental company, a wholesale distribution company, a branding and packaging company as well as my online business services company.  I have recently started a coaching certification program to enable me to grow my virtual company by including business coaching, masterminds and webinars to teach entrepreneurs business basics.  I work primarily with coaches who want to grow their businesses. I also enjoy writing articles and blogs.

Take your time to answer the questions the potential employer is looking for.  Also add a cover letter and follow their instructions for applying. Many small business owners will use a sequence of directions to see who can pay attention to detail and follow directions, if you don’t follow their directions you’ll be disregarded before you even have the chance to sell yourself.
