What is your top advice for small business owners looking to hire remote talent?

What is your top tip for working with a virtual team?

Over-communicate, especially during the first month.

Employer Success Story: Petra Wintner

What is your top advice for small business owners looking to hire remote talent?

This tip for me is true whether you hire remote or on-site talent, but for remote talent it is actually easier to implement: Before you actually hire, do a clearly communicated trial period. This period should be paid, but the expectation on both ends should be clear, that only after the period a decision for hiring is made. Depending on what you are hiring for this can be anything between a week and 2-3 months. There should be clearly defined goals/deliverables to be achieved during this period and the working mode should already resemble the future work mode.

What is your top tip for working with a virtual team?

Create communication channels that resemble an “office environment”, e.g. a Slack workspace, which can be used for questions as you would ask them walking over to a colleagues desk and set clear rules and expectations around the use of these communication channels: e.g. I might not look at my emails for the better part of a workday, because I batch my email-time, but I check messages on Slack immediately and try to answer asap.

Why did you decide to use HireMyMom.com for your hiring needs?

Because we are a service for parents/mothers and I was looking for someone with marketing experience, who understands the target group well. The “part-time working mom” is in my opinion an ideal employee profile combining high caliber with interest in working part-time and is therefore ideal at the stage of my business, where I cannot afford to hire a full-time resource, but need someone with experience, who can work independently.

What piece of advice do you wish someone had given you at the start of your business career?

I was lucky to start my career at a small company, where my contributions were more visible (to both superiors as well as clients) right from the start. While for me, it was coincidence, I would actually recommend, purposefully considering small businesses for a career.

What do you see as your greatest success in life?

That – at least so far – I managed to lead a life, where I was always content with my career and private life balance.

HireMyMom Success Story: Lauren Gamboa

Tell us about you and your experience finding work on HireMyMom.

I quit my full-time job as a bookkeeper two years ago when my youngest child was born. I recently joined Hire My Mom and have found several leads! Though I haven’t landed a bookkeeping position quite yet, I have been hired to do some web research.

I’m making great money and working when and however much I want to. All while staying home with my kids! This job has allowed me to get my foot in the door as a work-from-home mom. Plus, my membership has more than paid for itself and have found several leads!

What are your top tips for landing a job or jobs on HireMyMom.com?

My top tip is to check every single job post. Even though I’ve been specifically looking for bookkeeping jobs, I landed a job doing web research because I checked every single one. Have an open mind and you might find something great that you’re qualified for!

What piece of advice do you wish someone had given you at the start of your work-from-home journey?

Not everyone finds success when trying to start a freelance business on their own. When you’re first starting out, instead of putting all your focus on branding yourself and finding clients on your own, check the job boards for remote positions and apply to as many as you can. The key is to just start and get that money coming in!

What do you see as your greatest success in life?

Definitely becoming a mom. Raising my kids has made me grow in so many different ways. I can’t imagine life without them!

What is something about you that many people don’t know?

One of my goals in life is to be bilingual. I study Spanish every day and I’m currently at the intermediate level. I hope to become fluent one day!

Success Story : Tiffany Fulle

Tell us about you and your experience finding work on HireMyMom.

I was just starting my VA business on the side in January 2021 but I felt lost. I was looking for any and all resources that would help me be the most successful. I found the HireMyMom site mentioned on The Free Mama FB page. I’d never heard of it so I looked it up. I was shocked that there were so many legitimate positions available on the site. I signed up for the 3-day free trial on February 6, 2021 and applied about about 5 jobs right away. I had my first interview on February 10 and my second on February 12 with two different clients that I am still serving today (it’s June)! My husband was in a motorcycle accident in March (he’s okay now) but it catapulted me into working from home while he was recovering. I was so thankful that I could serve these clients while I was traveling back and forth to the hospital and be flexible with my kids schedules. I’ve continually applied for other positions and just landed my third HireMyMom client!!  I love them all even though they are all extremely different. This site changed my life, and I wish that I had found it years ago when I first had my babies (who are now 7 and 4) but I wouldn’t change the journey that we’ve been on. I’m just so grateful to have found it now. I also have told many of my friends about it! It’s a game changer!

What are your top tips for landing jobs on HireMyMom.com?

Have a strong resume or skills sheet, add a photo to it! (Hint: check out Canva.) Be a real person. We are not robots so be yourself when you interview. When you apply, make sure you read the descriptions and instructions in full and follow up with an email shortly after; this is your first impression with the potential employer or client, make it count.

What piece of advice do you wish someone had given you at the start of your work from home journey?

Have courage to reach out and apply even if you feel you don’t check every box on a “skills needed” list. Value your soft skills as well as your hard skills!

What do you see as your greatest success in life?

My kids are my world, and I do everything for them. I’m 100% a better mom and wife now that I have more flexibility and control with my work.

What is something about you that many people don’t know?

I’m a Harry Potter nerd 🙂

Employer Success Story : Nicole Liloia

What is your top advice for small business owners looking to hire remote talent?

It’s so important to not only be specific about the support and skills you need now, but also assess what you might need in the future so that you can stick with the same person and further their role with your company. It allows you to avoid having to hire multiple people and saves you both time and money.

What is your top tip for working with a virtual team?

Have regular meetings with them so that there is open communication — don’t just reach out to them via email or a project management tool. Connect with them regularly through zoom so you can get to know each other better and learn more about each other’s personality so you can support each other better as well.

Why did you decide to use HireMyMom.com for your hiring needs?

I had gotten an amazing recommendation from a client and was excited to try them out myself.

What piece of advice do you wish someone had given you at the start of your business career?

To make sure I continually nurtured connections with other business owners regardless of how busy I was at the time — it really opens you up to new possibilities that you might not have known about otherwise and also allows you to get multiple income stream opportunities as well.

What do you see as your greatest success in life?

Leaving my only 9 to 5 job when I had experienced extreme burnout and taking time off to travel and see the world. It was actually my inspiration to create an only business 8+ years ago because I wanted the ability to travel anywhere while I worked so that I could stay longer and absorb the culture more.

Success Story: Amy Davis

Tell us about you and your experience finding work on HireMyMom.

The first day I joined, I found two jobs that I was really excited about and applied. Then, there was about a 4 days or so that nothing new, that I was interested in, was popping up and I became discouraged. Just as I became discouraged, several jobs I was excited about appeared! I had three interviews in one week! One week later, I had my second interview with the company I most aligned with of the initial three. I received an offer and accepted in less than one month of membership! This was also the first time the company that hired me had posted a job on this website.

What are your top tips for landing a job or jobs on HireMyMom.com?

I think, checking daily is the key to finding the jobs that most align with what you are seeking.

What piece of advice do you wish someone had given you at the start of your work from home journey?

I have worked from home before, but I had one company give me a test. I liked that as a person that hasn’t been in a business setting in 10 year, so I don’t have the technology background companies currently look for, a test was a good way to show that I can figure things out quickly. I told the company I ultimately was hired by about the test, they thought that was a good idea and I was able to show my ability to be resourceful and got the job!

What do you see as your greatest success in life?

My ability to be flexible and shift in life when I need to with ease.

HireMyMom Success Story: Lisa Pou

Tell us about you and your experience finding work on HireMyMom.

I was referred to HireMyMom as I recently decided to start freelancing for myself and left the corporate world. When I first signed up, I actually applied for a job that I thought I’d be a good fit for. At the time, I was uneducated and didn’t realize how big a world there is for needing VA’s. I quickly found lots of resources here and ventured out to gain new skills. Fortunately, that one application led to my first VA job as a Campaign Manager. I got my first assignment that day!

What are your top tips for landing a job or jobs on HireMyMom.com?

Be confident. Know yourself and the skills you can bring to the job in order to be successful.

What piece of advice do you wish someone had given you at the start of your work from home journey?

I learned I needed to jazz up my resume compared to my corporate or AI job applicant type resume.

What do you see as your greatest success in life?

Having the confidence to allow myself the chance to go out on my own. To also know my weaknesses and what I need to do to overcome them.

What is something about you that many people don’t know?

I’ve been a widow and now a single mom for 3 years and have been laid off twice during this time. I’ve had to completely find a new normal in every aspect of my life. And luckily have had the strength to move forward and build a new life both personally & professionally.

HireMyMom Success Story: Tamlin Bruton

Tell us about you and your experience finding work on HireMyMom.

I joined HireMyMom in November 2019 on a limb to find a work at home job. My husband and I knew we wanted more for our family than working 50+ hours a week to just cover child care. I quit my job to take care of our 4 month old at home and my husband was working two jobs and averaging 65 hours a week. Our dream was for me to find a remote job working from home to be able to continue to stay home and my husband to be able to take a new job offer from a different company. To be honest, we were both so nervous to take a chance and had a decent discussion about spending money on a subscription because that’s how much of a budget we were on.

After having no luck on other job sites, we decided to take the chance, and I am SO glad we did!! I checked HireMyMom multiple times a week if not everyday and applied to everything that I could. I made sure to follow up with companies, keep my profile updated, and utilize both a resume and cover letter. At the beginning of February, I heard back about the next steps of one of my applications for a work from home job, answering a few questions in a pre-recorded video for a company based out of Nashville, TN. By the next week I made it to the final rounds of Zoom video interviews for the same company.

I am so thankful to say that February 18th, 2020 was my first day at my new full-time remote job!! Less than 3 months on HireMyMom changed mine and my family’s entire life.

What did you do previously?

I have my BS in Psychology and a double minor in sociology and public health. I have previous experience in customer service, network marketing, sales, and health and human services. Many years of my professional experience is specifically in the mental health setting, providing skills training and case management to adolescents and families at both the residential and state level.

What are your top tips for landing a job or jobs on HireMyMom.com?

CONSISTENCY. Check HireMyMom as much as you can. Apply, apply, apply, to any job that you believe you could make an excellent hire for. It is easy to get discouraged when trying to find a new employment opportunity because it can take time, but stick to your gut and your dream for you and your family.

What’s your favorite thing about HireMyMom.com?

The accessibility and access to the jobs listed. HireMyMom is extremely easy to toggle through and makes the application process smooth.

What’s one fun or interesting fact about you?

I have watched The Office more times than I care to admit. That show is my absolute go-to!!

HireMyMom Success Story: Sara Lingenfelter

What’s your success story with HireMyMom.com?

I had only been a member of HireMyMom for 2 months when I landed my first 2 clients! I was only trying to get 1 client, but both wanted to interview me and I thought why not? Besides, I didn’t think they would both offer me the position. But they did, and since neither was a high amount of hours I said yes to both. I learned so fast my responsibilities with my first client grew. We worked together for about 3 years total! I also ended up doing some work for his wife too. It got to the point, I wanted to do business management and he didn’t need that. To this day we are still friends. We even got to meet once at a conference we both happened to attend.
With the second client, after our phone interview, she offered me the job on the spot. She said she didn’t usually do that but after our conversation, she felt I was the right person. She and I worked together about 2 years. Again it was when I was moving onto higher level work and so we parted on a good note. And she and I still talk as well. While working for her, she flew me to an event in Vegas and it was really cool getting to meet her work her event.
After those two, I landed numerous other clients through HireMyMom. Some were just project-based, and during this time I was still working my bookkeeping job from home.  As my network grew, and I submitted really great proposals I was fortunately working a lot. About a year after doing VA work, I realized I could make more money doing that and that it could be a real business. In January of 2013, I decided to quit my job and do VA work full-time. Things had gotten to a point where if I wanted to do more, grow my skills, invest in building a business, I needed to quit my job to focus on this business that I “accidentally” started and just two years prior didn’t even know existed. I know many moms question if they can really make it as a VA. I’m very transparent when asked questions about how I got started, what I learned, and how much money I made. My first 11 months as a full-time VA, I billed out $47,000 which was $10,000 more than my salary as a bookkeeper.
I credit HireMyMom to giving me my start. Signing up was the BEST choice I made when trying to get started. Since starting I have worked with 75+ clients, I’ve really lost track of the exact number. I did eventually take a course to get certified in Online Business Management. The awesome thing about becoming a VA is there are so many possibilities. I ultimately did this work for my son, so he could stay home with me. HireMyMom is connecting clients and VA’s in a way that truly impacts families in an amazing way!

What’s your educational and experiential background?

My parents never went to college, and they always talked about how they regretted it. So I went to college at night after graduating high school. I had to work full-time to put myself through school, so that’s the reason I went at night plus the tuition was cheaper for night classes. I went to Drury University and got a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and Psychology. Then I always had office jobs from the age of 18 to 31. But my plan was to become a Probation and Parole office for the State of Missouri. To be clear, I had NO business background, no entrepreneurial experience, and no training when I started working as a VA.

What is your top tip (or tips) for landing a gig on HireMyMom.com?

I could give many, but I have this top tip and it’s what worked for me! It is, to be honest about your experience. Many clients are looking for certain skills. But when I first started, I didn’t have any experience with the online world. I had just dabbled in Google doc. I didn’t know any software programs. These potentials clients I was sending proposals to wanted people with certain skills that are common for someone that had been working as a VA for a while.
Here’s what I did and you can do too. I had gotten a job as a bookkeeper (prior to working online) but when I went to the job interview I thought I was interviewing to be a secretary. At the interview, I find out the owners of the business changed their mind. A friend referred me to them and told them I was smart. I had experience with money, payroll, and unions but that was it. And it just so happened they needed to replace their bookkeeper more than they did their receptionist. Long story short, they offered me the job. What does this have to do with being a VA? Well in a few months and with a bit of training, I was doing all aspects of bookkeeping for this HVAC company that did average sales of $3.5 million a year. In my proposals to potential clients I explained, that even though I didn’t have experience with the programs they list, I know that if given the chance I was 100% confident I could learn that program or programs. And I gave them the short explanation of how I went from never doing bookkeeping to being able to fully perform all job functions needed and had that job for 10 years. I did payroll, used account/inventory software, created financials and much more.
What does this mean for you? Give an example of a time you learned something and performed it very well! If they understand you can learn, potential clients are often very willing to give you a chance, especially if they feel you are organized, pay attention to details and communicate well. You can’t always teach someone those soft skills but you can teach them a software program or give them a chance to learn it.

What’s your favorite thing about HireMyMom.com?

My top favorite thing is that potential clients realize most of the VA’s applying are moms. I’ve heard negative talk in the past about a mom working from home also having her kids home with her. By having this site, most potential clients understand you have kids and it gets you over that hurdle that can be an issue with some. It makes the process easier and I love that.

What’s one fun fact about you?

I went skydiving when I was 21 but yet I am scared of rides at theme parks. I’ve never been on a roller coaster or any other ride like that, I play it safe, too scared! LOL I have no idea the logic.
